New Delhi, Aug 5: National Conference MPs on Wednesday joined leaders of the INDIA bloc in a protest inside the Parliament complex, pressing the Centre to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and honour its commitment on the issue.
The demonstration, led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, saw MPs from several opposition parties gather with placards demanding the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory.
National Conference MP Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, along with party leaders Sajad Ahmad Kichloo and Shammi Obera, participated in the protest and reiterated the party’s long-standing demand for the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
The NC leaders said restoring statehood was essential for strengthening democratic institutions and fulfilling the constitutional aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The opposition leaders urged the Centre to expedite the process, noting that the Union government had on several occasions assured that statehood would be restored at an appropriate time.
During the protest, INDIA bloc MPs also demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament over the alleged use of force against students protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The demonstration was attended by MPs from various opposition parties and came on the anniversary of the August 5, 2019 constitutional changes that reorganised the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.(KNS).
