Srinagar, September 1 : Seeking an end to years of uncertainty over their employment, members of the Jammu and Kashmir Casual Daily Wagers Forum staged a demonstration at Press Enclave here on Tuesday, calling on the administration to expedite the process of their regularisation.
The protesters said the committee constituted to examine their long-standing demand should submit its report without further delay, alleging that repeated assurances on the issue had not yet translated into a concrete decision.
Addressing the gathering, forum president Sajad Ahmed Parray said the workers expected the government to honour its commitment and initiate steps towards settling the matter.
“We have been given assurances on regularisation and now expect the government to act on them. The issue cannot be kept pending indefinitely,” Parray said.
As part of their campaign to draw attention to the difficulties faced by casual workers, the forum will screen a 16-minute film documenting their working conditions and hardships at Tagore Hall in Srinagar on Tuesday afternoon.
Parray also announced another demonstration at SK Park on September 10, saying the workers would continue with their peaceful campaign until their demand is addressed.
The forum has been seeking regularisation for casual and daily-wage workers, many of whom have remained engaged with government departments for years without a permanent employment status.(KNS)
