“What is the use of 50 MLAs and 3 MPs if they can’t solve people’s problems?” she asks

Pahalgam, June 10:
In a bid to revive tourism and restore communal harmony in Kashmir, former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday held a key interaction with stakeholders in the scenic resort town of Pahalgam.

Speaking to hoteliers, ponywalas, and workers along the Amarnath Yatra route, Mehbooba Mufti underscored the critical role of locals in facilitating the annual pilgrimage. “The Army may provide security, but it is the people of Pahalgam who are the true protectors of the Yatra. They’ve braved storms and snowfall for years to support pilgrims. That spirit must be revived,” she said in an interview with KNS.

Calling the Yatra a living symbol of Kashmir’s age-old communal harmony, she praised the role Kashmiri Muslims have played in assisting Hindu pilgrims throughout history.

In a sharp critique of the current political leadership, Mufti questioned the effectiveness of the National Conference-led alliance. “What is the use of 50 MLAs and 3 Members of Parliament if they can’t address the problems of the people? All they do is issue statements—something we too do when in opposition,” she said, in a clear reference to Omar Abdullah’s party.

Mehbooba appealed to the people of Pahalgam to continue their tradition of hospitality, make proper arrangements for pilgrims, and help restore confidence in Kashmir’s tourism sector. “Let’s work together to heal past wounds and rebuild the social fabric that once united communities,” she urged.

Describing Pahalgam as her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s favorite destination, she concluded on a hopeful note: “InshaAllah, the Yatra will pass peacefully and tourism will flourish once again.” (KNS)
