Srinagar, June 14 : The ongoing heatwave continues to impact Jammu and Kashmir, with the Meteorological Department issuing ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts across the region for the coming days. High temperatures, dry conditions, and gusty winds are expected to persist until June 19, with only June 17 likely to see some relief.

The MeT Department has placed an ‘orange’ alert for Saturday (June 15), warning of severe heatwave conditions, while a ‘yellow’ alert remains in effect for June 15, 16, 18, and 19. Hot and dry weather is expected to dominate over the next 24 hours, with daytime temperatures staying well above average.

Srinagar and nearby areas received brief afternoon showers on Thursday, providing temporary relief from the sweltering conditions. Light rain and cloudy skies helped ease the intensity of the heat.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, scattered light rain and thundershowers, along with gusty winds, are likely from June 16. However, dry and hot conditions are forecast between June 17 and June 20.

From June 21 to 23, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy, with intermittent showers in several areas.

In its latest advisory, the department warned of heatwave conditions in isolated to scattered areas over the next 48 hours. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours (12 noon to 4 pm), and take necessary precautions. Farmers have been advised to continue agricultural activities as planned.

On Thursday, maximum temperatures remained above normal across the region. Srinagar recorded 32.4°C, Jammu touched 43.6°C, and Qazigund reached 32.8°C. Kokernag and Kupwara recorded 31.8°C and 31.9°C respectively. In the hill stations, Pahalgam registered 28.2°C, while Gulmarg saw 23.0°C.

In the Jammu region, Katra experienced 39.5°C, Banihal 31.8°C, Batote 31.6°C, and Bhaderwah 30.8°C.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as high temperatures and dry weather prevail across J&K.(KNS)
