Srinagar, Mar 4 : The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator from Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, on Wednesday urged the administration to ensure the immediate release of detained youths and the withdrawal of First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against mourners.

Raising the issue during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the MLA, who also serves as the head of the J&K Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, submitted a detailed report regarding the congregational programmes currently underway across the Union Territory.

According to a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Mehdi asserted that the mourning processions and gatherings are purely religious in nature. He appealed to the government to adopt a humanitarian approach, emphasizing the need for confidence-building measures to foster communal harmony and public trust. He specifically demanded the immediate release of detained youths and the withdrawal of charges and FIRs registered against the participants.

The legislator maintained that the implementation of these measures would significantly help in easing the prevailing tensions. This, he added, would ensure the peaceful observance of religious programmes across the region. (KNS)
