Srinagar, Jun 4 National Conference leader and MP from Srinagar Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday criticised the manner in which the ruling party conducted its recent legislators’ meeting at Dachigam, saying the shifting of MLAs from one venue to another suggested the leadership lacked trust in its own ranks.
“The manner in which the meeting was conducted, with MLAs being moved from one venue to another, created an impression that the leadership lacks faith in its own legislators,” the Srinagar MP told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).
MP Ruhullah, a senior party leader, said the tour of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led NC legislators to Dachigam appeared as if a floor test was being conducted.
“Such optics suggested a lack of confidence in the party’s own MLAs,” he said.
The MP asserted that discussions would only be meaningful if they translated into sustained political action aimed at restoring the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Referring to PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s recent appeal for joint action by political parties, MP Ruhullah welcomed broader participation but stressed that symbolic gestures alone would not be enough.
On the proposed committee to examine prohibition, the MP questioned the need for consultations, asserting there was already a broad public consensus on the issue.
“There is no need for a committee. The government should take a decision in the Cabinet if it believes there is public support for prohibition,” he said.
Notably, after a day-long meeting of the National Conference legislative party at the Dachigam National Park on Wednesday, the party has decided to hold a protest demonstration in the national capital on the first day of the monsoon session, seeking the restoration of statehood and J&K’s “constitutional guarantees”.
