Ganderbal, June 9 : Two children died after accidentally falling into an irrigation canal in Goripora village of Kangan area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday, officials said.

The victims were identified as Aishiya (4), daughter of Mohammad Amin Lone, and Mohammad Imran (6), son of Mohammad Iqbal Lone, both residents of Goripora.

According to officials and local residents, the children slipped and fell into the Baba irrigation canal while they were near the water channel.

Soon after the incident, locals rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The children were later retrieved from the canal and shifted from the site, but they had succumbed by then, they said.

The incident triggered grief in the village, with residents expressing shock over the deaths of the two minors.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident, while necessary legal formalities are being carried out, officials added.(KNS)
