Srinagar, Apr 1 : The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) has filed a chargesheet against a doctor and his wife before a special court in Srinagar in a case related to alleged misuse of social media platforms under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), officials said on Wednesday.

The chargesheet was submitted before the Special Judge designated under the NIA Act against Dr Umer Farooq Bhat, a resident of Kulgam, and his wife Shahzada Akther in connection with a 2025 case registered at CIK police station.

According to officials, the case was initiated following inputs suggesting the involvement of the accused in circulating misleading and fabricated content linked to a banned organisation.

Investigations indicated that the woman was allegedly in touch with members of Dukhtaran-e-Millat and, along with her husband, was involved in generating and sharing content on social media platforms, including encrypted applications.

The material, officials said, was aimed at promoting separatist narratives and creating disaffection against the Union of India.

Authorities also alleged that the accused shared content intended to create disharmony among communities and incite unrest, posing a threat to public order.

The police said evidence collected during the probe pointed to offences under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the UAPA.

The chargesheet has been filed for judicial determination, and further proceedings in the case will follow as per law.

The CIK said it will continue to take action against activities that threaten the sovereignty and integrity of the country.(KNS)
