Srinagar, July 17 (KNS): In a major achievement under the Swachh Survekshan 2024, Jammu has been declared the cleanest city in Jammu & Kashmir. The announcement was made today by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, based on a detailed survey conducted in April and May 2025.

Jammu Municipal Corporation not only topped the UT rankings but also earned the prestigious 3-Star Garbage-Free City (GFC) certification. It was further honoured with the ‘Promising Swachh Shehar’ award for its consistent efforts in cleanliness, citizen participation, and waste management. The state award was received by Dr. Devansh Yadav (IAS), MD SBM and Commissioner JMC, at a function in New Delhi.

The survey, India’s largest annual urban cleanliness assessment, evaluated waste management, sanitation facilities, public feedback, and cleanliness compliance across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the UT.

Adding to the UT’s success, Beerwah Municipal Committee earned a 1-Star GFC rating, and 70 ULBs achieved Open Defecation Free Plus (ODF+) status, with two attaining ODF++ certification.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThese results show clear progress in urban sanitation and public awareness.

The Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban 2.0 is being implemented in J&K by the Housing & Urban Development Department, led by Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur (IAS). Under her leadership, urban bodies across the UT have shown remarkable improvement in sanitation, hygiene, and solid waste management.

Officials credit the achievement to strong teamwork between the government, local bodies, and the public. “This success reflects our shared commitment to creating cleaner, healthier, and more livable cities,” said a department spokesperson.

Jammu & Kashmir’s performance in Swachh Survekshan 2024 is seen as a turning point in its journey towards sustainable urban development, cleaner environments, and active community participation.(KNS)
