Night chill tightens grip across Kashmir as ‘Chillai Kalan’ nears

Srinagar, Dec 17 : Several parts of Kashmir recorded sub-zero minimum temperatures on Tuesday, while the Jammu region witnessed relatively milder night temperatures as ‘Chillai Kalan’, the Valley’s harshest winter period, is set to begin on December 21.

In the Kashmir region, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius, while the temperature at Srinagar Airport settled at 0.0 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund recorded 0.8 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 0.4 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 1.0 degrees Celsius.

Pampore and Baramulla recorded lows of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius each, while Awantipora registered the lowest temperature in the Valley at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Pulwama recorded minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, Shopian minus 1.5 degrees Celsius and Budgam minus 0.8 degrees Celsius.

Anantnag recorded a minimum of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, Bandipora minus 0.8 degrees Celsius and Ganderbal minus 0.1 degrees Celsius. Kokernag recorded 1.8 degrees Celsius, Kulgam 2.0 degrees Celsius and Sonamarg 2.1 degrees Celsius.

Tourist resort Gulmarg recorded a low of 1.6 degrees Celsius, while Zojila Pass recorded the coldest temperature in the region at minus 17 degrees Celsius.

In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 11.0 degrees Celsius, while Jammu Airport recorded 11.5 degrees Celsius. Katra recorded 12.1 degrees Celsius, Banihal 5.7 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah 5.0 degrees Celsius.

Batote recorded 9.5 degrees Celsius, Udhampur 6.1 degrees Celsius, Ramban 8.3 degrees Celsius, Samba 7.1 degrees Celsius and Rajouri 3.0 degrees Celsius. Kathua and Doda recorded 8.8 degrees Celsius each, while Kishtwar recorded 8.6 degrees Celsius and Reasi 9.7 degrees Celsius.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius.(KNS).
