Bandipora, Dec 18 : Police in North Kashmir have intensified their crackdown on narcotics trafficking, terrorism and rising social crimes, with a renewed focus on dismantling the financial networks that sustain the drug trade, Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir Range, Maqsood-ul-Zaman said on Wednesday.

Addressing the media after a public outreach programme in the Hajin area of Bandipora district, the DIG said the police have adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics and are now targeting the economic backbone of drug syndicates rather than limiting action to arrests alone.

“We are moving decisively to break the financial backbone of drug networks,” Maqsood-ul-Zaman said, adding that multiple cases under narcotics laws have been registered across North Kashmir.

He said investigations are underway to identify and attach both movable and immovable properties acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking.

“The aim is to dismantle the entire ecosystem by choking its economic lifeline,” he said, adding that financial disruption is key to curbing the spread of drugs.

The DIG described drug abuse as a serious social menace and warned that it poses a grave threat to society, particularly to the youth. He said law enforcement agencies are maintaining a parallel focus on counter-terrorism operations and action against other social crimes to ensure sustained peace and stability in the region.

During the outreach programme, Maqsood-ul-Zaman interacted with local residents, listened to their grievances and assured them of responsive and people-centric policing.

He added that public cooperation and timely information are crucial in tackling crime and preserving harmony in North Kashmir. (KNS)
