Srinagar, April 14 : Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone VK Birdi on Tuesday announced an intensified crackdown on drug peddlers and smugglers across the valley, asserting a “zero tolerance” policy against narcotics, while warning of legal action against those involved in a recent “illegal act” in Sopore.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Baisakhi celebrations in Srinagar, the IGP, as per news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), stated that the anti-drug campaign has gained “new impetus” under the Drug Free India initiative.

“All ranks of the police department have been instructed to maintain zero tolerance towards drugs. In the coming days, the campaign against drugs will be very intense,” IGP Birdi said. “Strictest action will be taken against all drug peddlers, smugglers, and those who abuse substances to protect our present and future generations from addiction.”

Addressing the Sopore incident, the IGP referred to a situation on Monday where “some people tried to commit an illegal act and took the law into their own hands.”

He clarified that those involved had no connection to a school, which was initially linked to the unrest. “If they try to commit an illegal act, the Jammu and Kashmir Police will take legal action against them,” he warned. (KNS)
