Srinagar, Jun 5: National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah on Friday questioned his party-led government’s decision to form a committee on the proposed liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that a “clear public mandate” already exists against alcohol.

Speaking to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), MP Ruhullah said, “Why should we form a committee? We have to sit in the cabinet and take a decision.”

The Srinagar MP said a committee is only needed to seek public opinion. “But here, people have already told you their opinion when they voted for you — that alcohol is a crime. Now, you should be ashamed,” he said.

MP Ruhullah said, “The BJP also tells you that alcohol is a crime. It is a joke to hear this from them. But you gave them a chance to speak.”

Asserting that there was a clear public mandate against liquor, he said, “Why should we form a committee? We should sit in the cabinet and take a decision. Alcohol will be a crime. I don’t understand this joke.”

Notably, the Jammu and Kashmir government had on Wednesday announced it would constitute a committee to examine a proposal seeking a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in the Union Territory. (KNS)
