Darwin, Aug 16 : Bangladesh created history on Sunday by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test in Darwin, securing their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.

Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings despite a fighting century from Cameron Green, who scored 104. Bangladesh were left with a target of just 57 runs and reached it for the loss of one wicket on the fourth day.

Bangladesh had taken control of the match from the opening day. Australia were dismissed for 198 in their first innings, with Hasan Mahmud taking a career-best six wickets for 55 runs.

In reply, Bangladesh posted 426, taking a massive 228-run first-innings lead. Tanzid Hasan scored a historic 101, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to make a Test century in Australia.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz then played a key role with both bat and ball. He scored 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings and took five wickets in Australia’s second innings.

Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match.

The victory is Bangladesh’s second Test win over Australia overall. Their first came in 2017 in Dhaka, when they won by 20 runs.

The result also puts Bangladesh 1-0 ahead in the two-match Test series and gives them a strong chance of securing their first-ever Test series victory in Australia.(KNS)
