Srinagar, Jan 01 : In a sustained crackdown on drug trafficking, Baramulla Police in North Kashmir registered 76 cases under the NDPS Act in 2025, leading to the arrest of 104 persons, officials said. Additionally, three habitual offenders were booked under the stringent PIT NDPS Act.

According to official data accessed by KNS , drugs worth ₹11.43 crore were seized during the year. Heroin accounted for the largest recovery, with 2.165 kg seized, valued at around ₹8.35 crore. This was followed by 1.340 kg of brown sugar worth nearly ₹2.68 crore.

Other seizures included 30.480 kg of charas powder (₹19.81 lakh), 3.418 kg of charas (₹17.09 lakh), over 4 kg of poppy straw, along with 1,887 banned tablets and 49 bottles of prohibited formulations.

To choke the financial network of drug peddlers, police attached a vehicle worth ₹13.83 lakh, with the case forwarded to SAFEEMA for confirmation. A large-scale anti-cultivation drive also led to the destruction of wild cannabis spread over 368.79 kanals and 11 marlas, resulting in four FIRs against five individuals.

Alongside enforcement, rehabilitation efforts continued through the Police Drug De-addiction Centre (PDDC) Baramulla, which provided treatment to 322 patients in OPD and 17 patients in IPD. The centre also conducted 33 awareness programmes, while 846 IEC activities were organised across the district in coordination with other departments to curb substance abuse. (KNS)
