Srinagar, Sep 17 : Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic for the Kashmir Range Haseeb ur Rehman on Thursday said India’s first-ever ‘Drivers’ Dignity Day’ is being celebrated across the country and it started from Srinagar.
“It is a matter of pride for all of us that it has started from Srinagar and this day is being celebrated in the whole country,” DIG Rehman told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).
The purpose of this is that the drivers, who are an important part of our society, who are promoting our economy — if there are no truck drivers, the goods cannot reach from one place to another. If there are no drivers, the people who travel cannot reach from one place to another. They should get the respect of their share. That is the purpose of this program, the DIG Traffic said.
DIG Traffic, however, stressed that drivers also have an important responsibility to follow traffic rules, and said the traffic department takes action wherever violations occur.
Wherever there is a violation, the traffic department always takes action. Recently, we have taken action on Smart City buses, which were overloaded. We have taken strict action against them. Sometimes they have been charged and sometimes the buses have been seized. No one can even imagine the violation of traffic rules, he said.
He said while violators will face strict action, disciplined drivers need to be encouraged and facilitated.
But the disciplined driver needs to be encouraged and facilitated. The purpose of this program is that the driver’s dignity should be respected. This is our responsibility, DIG Traffic said.
On the question of uniforms, the DIG Traffic said government bus drivers wear them but there is a gap in the private sector.
“As far as the government buses are concerned, you will see that they wear uniforms. But as far as private vehicles are concerned, there is a shortage. But you will see that in the coming days, they will also try to come under the discipline,” he said. (KNS)
