Jammu, Feb 9 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said the government remains committed to providing electricity to every household in Jammu and Kashmir, including newly established and remote habitations.

Replying to a question in the Legislative Assembly from MLA Satish Kumar Sharma of Billawar on un-electrified habitations in his constituency, Abdullah said that while no village in the UT is entirely without power, some smaller habitations or morhas still lack connections.

“The population is growing, villages are expanding, and new houses are coming up. Electrifying all of them is a continuous process that requires preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs),” he said.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Power portfolio, said electrification work is being carried out under centrally sponsored schemes and the UT Capex programme. DPRs for areas flagged by the MLA are under preparation, and efforts are ongoing to ensure no household is left without electricity.

Abdullah cited habitations such as Thingnen, Kanodi, and Hanok in Panchayat Madoon/Dehota in Billawar as examples of partially electrified areas. While most un-electrified households in the region have been approved for electrification under the DA-JGUA scheme, some were excluded from the final DPR due to rising project costs.

“All villages in Jammu Division are electrified either through on-grid or off-grid systems. Efforts are underway to extend the network to new habitations and ensure coverage under the DA-JGUA and UT Capex schemes,” he added.(KNS)
