New Delhi, May 2: The Government of India (GOI) on Saturday conducted a nationwide test of its cell broadcast-based emergency alert system, with mobile phone users across the country receiving an ‘Extremely Severe’ alert message.

The test message, which appeared with a loud ringtone and vibration, was part of a trial exercise and not linked to any real emergency, officials said.

The exercise was aimed at evaluating the efficiency and speed of the alert mechanism in delivering warnings to citizens during critical situations, they added.

The system is designed to issue real-time alerts during natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, cyclones, and other emergencies, enabling prompt dissemination of information to the public.

Authorities have said no action is required from the public as the alert was only a test message. (KNS)
