Srinagar, Oct 13 : Additional Director General of Police (Armed Police), Kashmir, Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said the annual ‘Jashn-e-Dal’ water sports event is not merely a competition but a celebration of Kashmir’s rich culture, tradition and heritage asserted that such programmes help steer the youth away from drug addiction.

Speaking at the inaugral ceremony of the event organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on the banks of the famous Dal Lake here, ADGP Kumar as per news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) said the programme is held with great enthusiasm every year and draws participation from players across various categories of water sports.

This is a Jashn-e-Dal function organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police. In this, in different categories of our water sports, many of our players participate. And this is a program organized by J&K Police every year, he said.

ADGP Kumar said the event transcends its identity as a sporting spectacle.

This is not just a Jashn-e-Dal in Kashmir. I would rather say that this is a Jashn-e-Kashmir. This is a very good demonstration of the rich culture, tradition and heritage of Kashmir. And you can see that we are standing here with Dal Lake. It is such a beautiful place, he said.

The ADGP said the competition will be played over the next three days, with the concluding ceremony scheduled for October 15, where winners and participating teams will be felicitated and awarded.

Urging talented players to participate enthusiastically, he said, Try to win. But do not let yourself be deprived of the spirit of a sportsman by winning and losing.

Responding to a question on the success of a programme held by the Lieutenant Governor in Jammu and Kashmir, Kumar said it saw participation from the youth as well as people of all ages.

The result of that program is that today, the problem of drug addiction and drug peddling — I would not say that it has stopped, but there has been a lot of reduction in it, he said.

Stating that the younger generation faces stress and anxiety, he said sports serves as an effective intervention.

This is a very normal thing. Our generation is going through all kinds of tensions. Sports is a very good medium in it, which keeps our children, our youth away from drugs. It does not only fit them physically, but also mentally fits them, mentally empowers them, and keeps them away from drugs and other diseases and evils, ADGP Kumar said. (KNS)
