Srinagar, Aug 1: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday termed the Kulgam terrorist attack on two migrant labourers as “extremely unfortunate” and asserted that those who target innocent people earning an honest livelihood in the Valley deserve the strongest condemnation.
“No amount of money can undo the impact of this attack or reduce the pain and suffering faced by their families,” CM Omar told reporters during his visit to Bengaluru.
The attack took place in the Kellam area of Kulgam district late Friday night, when suspected terrorists opened fire on brick-kiln workers from Chhattisgarh, killing two of them.
On statehood, says movement will continue
Replying to a query on restoration of statehood to the Union Territory, Abdullah said the demand will not be met through symbolic gestures and that sustained agitation is required.
“This is only the beginning. We know that we were not going to get statehood just by going to Jantar Mantar for a single day. Thousands of students had to continue their protest for 25 days. We will also have to continue this movement. Some activities will take place in Jammu and Kashmir, and some in Delhi, and this will continue until our demand is fulfilled,” he said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the Centre had made a commitment on statehood to the people of J&K, and the same must be honoured. (KNS)
