Jammu, Feb 13 : A total of 32,425 cancer cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years, with lung, breast, oral, cervical, prostate, and pancreatic cancers being the most commonly detected types, the Government informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday.

The data was shared in a written reply by the Health and Medical Education Department to a question raised by Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para regarding treatment of terminal diseases. According to the reply, Jammu Division recorded 6,804 cases between 2023 and 2025, while Kashmir Division reported 25,621 cases between 2022 and 2024.

The government said comprehensive cancer care is being provided at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, and the State Cancer Institute at Government Medical College, Jammu. Services include medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, along with advanced diagnostics such as PET-CT, CT scans, and MRI.

Awareness and screening programmes are being conducted through outpatient services, health camps, and the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NPCDCS).

Specialized oncology services are available at Government Medical Colleges in Jammu and Srinagar, but not at district hospitals or Community Health Centres. PET scan facilities are currently limited to SKIMS, Soura.

The government added that no uncommon disease of major public health significance has been reported in any district, and efforts are ongoing to strengthen early detection, treatment, and patient care across the Union Territory.(KNS).
