Srinagar, Mar 10 : Overnight rains lashed Srinagar and several other parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, bringing a noticeable drop in day temperatures across the Valley, with the meteorological department predicting more precipitation over the next few days.
The MeT department has forecast generally cloudy weather with light rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir over the next 72 hours.
An independent weather forecaster, Faizan Arif, told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) that mostly cloudy weather with chances of rain and snow is expected over Jammu and Kashmir during the next three days.
He said heavy rain is likely over the plains of north Kashmir’s Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora districts, with moderate to heavy spells possible over central and south Kashmir during this period.
Moderate to heavy snowfall is possible over higher reaches, including the Sonamarg-Zojila axis, Sinthan top, Sadhna top, Razdan top and Peer ki Gali, he added.
A senior official at the Meteorological Centre Srinagar told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) that from March 10 to 11, the region is likely to witness generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain in the plains and snowfall over higher reaches at many places.
He said a few higher altitude areas of Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag and Kishtwar may receive moderate snowfall during this period.
The MeT official said weather conditions are expected to improve from March 12 to 15, with generally dry weather and occasional cloudiness. However, brief spells of light rain or snow may occur at isolated places during this period.
From March 16 to 18, the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy with light rain or snowfall over higher reaches at isolated to scattered places, he added.
The department has issued an advisory warning of temporary traffic disruption over higher reaches and important mountain passes in parts of Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag and Kishtwar due to snowfall. (KNS)
