Srinagar, Oct 16 : The Srinagar administration is installing protective fencing along bridges over the River Jhelum to prevent suicide attempts and accidental falls, with safety upgrades underway at Budshah Bridge and several other locations across the city.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Friday inspected the fencing and upgradation works at Budshah Bridge, where protective railings and lighting facilities are being installed on both sides.

Labroo said the measures were being undertaken in response to concerns over suicide incidents from bridges and public demands for improved pedestrian safety.

He said similar safety measures had already been undertaken at several vulnerable bridges in Shahr-e-Khaas, including New Zaina Kadal, Aali Kadal, Old Zaina Kadal, Nawakadal and Safakadal.

Fencing work at Noor Jehan Bridge in Qamarwari is also being taken up and is expected to be completed soon, he added.

Officials said the Budshah Bridge project includes structural steel posts covered with stainless steel sheets, protective railings at different levels and high-tensile steel strands to strengthen the fencing system.

Lighting facilities are also being installed along the railings to improve visibility during night hours.

The Deputy Commissioner said the administration was seeking to improve public safety while preserving the appearance of the bridges and their surroundings.

He said the fencing would provide additional protection to pedestrians and commuters without affecting the scenic character of the Jhelum riverfront.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mir Imtiyaz Ul Aziz and senior officials from the Roads and Buildings Department, KPDCL and district administration accompanied the Deputy Commissioner during the inspection. (KNS)
