Srinagar, Oct 9 : The Supreme Court of India is set to hear petitions seeking the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood on Friday. The matter has been listed at serial number 17 before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai.

Advocate Soayib Qureshi confirmed that the case is scheduled for hearing on October 10. “The case is listed before the Chief Justice of India. However, the Union of India has not yet filed its response,” he said.

Earlier, during a hearing on August 14, the Supreme Court observed that the real situation on the ground must be considered while dealing with the matter. The bench, comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, referred to the Pahalgam attack, stressing that such incidents cannot be ignored.

“You must also take into account the ground realities; you cannot ignore what happened in Pahalgam,” the Chief Justice had remarked.

The petitioners have argued that the prolonged delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood goes against the spirit of federalism a core feature of the Indian Constitution. (KNS)
