Baramulla, Jan 09 : Authorities have ordered the temporary closure of the vital Uri-Baramulla highway on Sunday, January 11, due to concerns over potential landslides triggered by scheduled hill-cutting work.
An official order, a copy of which lies with Kashmir News Service (KNS), reads that the decision was made at the request of the Officer Commanding of 53 RCC (GREF). In a communication dated January 9, 2026, the officer indicated that essential hill-cutting operations are planned at two locations: Danakha Mode (Design Chainage 65+600) and NS Bridge, Uri (Design Chainage 102+800).
The order notes that due to the nature of the work, there is significant apprehension of landslides, necessitating a road closure to ensure public safety during the execution. It further references recent minor landslides along the route, underscoring the need for temporary traffic restrictions at the specified sites.
Consequently, to prevent any loss of life or property, the Baramulla-Uri Road will remain closed at the two mentioned locations on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Notably, the Uri-Baramulla Highway has experienced three major landslides in the past 20 days, each disrupting traffic for several hours. Fortunately, no loss of life or injuries were reported in these incidents.
Earlier this week, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, said that geological hazards are an inherent challenge during major highway expansion projects in mountainous terrain. However, he emphasized a proactive approach to mitigation. “We are deploying every effort to minimize these occurrences and ensure a swift response,” Sherpa said. He added that all earth-cutting operations are being mandated to follow scientific guidelines to reduce slope instability, warning that any illegal activities would be met with strict enforcement.
