Srinagar, May 5 : The Jammu and Kashmir administration has registered 481 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested 518 drug peddlers in the first 22 days of a 100-day ‘Nasha Mukt’ campaign launched by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, officials said.

An official told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) Twenty-four properties belonging to peddlers, termed “proceeds of crime”, have been confiscated and demolished during the period. Assets worth crores of rupees have also been seized, the official said.

More than 300 driving licences have been recommended for cancellation as part of the drive, the official added.

The 100-day milestone of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ is being observed across Kashmir through awareness programmes and padayatras to educate the community, particularly the youth, about the harmful effects of drugs, officials said.

On Sunday, thousands of people, including government employees and students, participated in an anti-drug march led by the Lt Governor.

Speaking after the padyatra, LG Sinha described the campaign as a “people’s movement” and called for collective efforts to “build a Jammu and Kashmir where no child is lost to drugs and no family is broken by addiction”.

Earlier this week, while reviewing the progress, the Lt Governor directed district administrations to adopt a focused, time-bound and result-oriented strategy for the remaining 78 days of the campaign official said.

He also called for intensified grassroots-level engagement at Panchayat and ward levels, involving religious leaders, educationists, traders, youth groups and social activists to transform the campaign into a sustained mass movement, the official added.

LG Sinha also emphasised strict and visible enforcement actions against those involved in drug trafficking, officials said.(KNS)
