Ahmedabad, Jul 27 : Five journalists from Kashmir are participating in a capacity-building programme on National Security Journalism organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) here in Gujrat Ahmedabad.
The 11-day residential workshop, which commenced on Monday, will conclude on August 6. It aims to train journalists in reporting on sensitive security issues with accuracy and responsibility.
The participants from Kashmir including Sheikh Saleem, Muneeb ul Haq, Syed Rizwan Geelani, Suhail Khan and Waris Fayaz.
According to the statement issued, the inaugural day featured three sessions where experts discussed the broader perspective of national security journalism and its relevance for reporters covering conflict-prone regions, with particular focus on Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the inaugural session, RRU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Kalpesh H. Wandra said the programme seeks to develop journalists capable of reporting on national security with strategic understanding. He said the curriculum includes expert-led sessions, case-based learning, practical reporting tools and field exposure.
The training will cover defence, internal security, terrorism, border management, coastal security, cyber incidents, public order, disasters and critical infrastructure, he added.
Dr. Jasbir Kaur Thadhani, Dean Academic at RRU, welcomed the journalists and said they would visit key national security institutions for first-hand operational exposure.
She noted that national security reporting has become increasingly significant in the digital age, adding that the rapid growth of digital platforms has accelerated the spread of misinformation, making responsible journalism more essential than ever.
The programme aims to equip journalists with domain knowledge, contextual understanding and verification skills to report security issues responsibly, she added the statement further reads. (KNS)
