Srinagar, Sep 30 : Director General of Police J&K, Nalin Prabhat on Tuesday said that the force continued to pursue Pakistani terrorists relentlessly while simultaneously promoting sports, youth engagement and the fight against narcotics across the Union Territory.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 20th J&K Police Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament 2025 at the Synthetic Turf TRC Ground in Srinagar, DGP said J&K Police had always maintained a dual focus, combating terror networks backed from across the border and expanding sporting activities to build community engagement. He added that the force was “always after” Pakistani terrorists and that the pursuit was constant and uncompromising.

The DGP also said the police force was working “completely and diligently” against the drug menace, adopting strict legal procedures and pursuing all cases firmly. He added that 10 police-run drug de-addiction centres had been operational for several years and that 207 addicts had been treated this year, of whom nearly 200 were inpatients.

Nalin said engaging young people was vital to keeping society on the right track. He added that police had been taking youth outside the Union Territory to expose them to peace, progress and traditions elsewhere in the country.

He further said that 781 children had travelled last year and 981 had been sent this year under these programmes.

The DGP said that the event honoured the memory of 1,614 police martyrs. He added that this year the force had lost four personnel in Kathua district in March.

He said the next of kin of martyrs were being supported through multiple relief measures, adding that Rs 1.7 crore had been disbursed in ex-gratia assistance, along with additional relief from the Government of India, personal accident insurance and coverage through concerned banks.

Families were also assisted through special welfare relief, DGP said as per KNS adding that each family received Rs 1 lakh and another Rs 1 lakh was provided for the marriage of daughters.

He said educational support was extended up to the 12th standard, whether in private or government schools.

The DGP also said free shifting was provided to all police public schools for senior classes and that scholarships covered higher education, including PG, MD, M.Tech and PhD courses. He added that appointment letters had been issued to five next of kin of martyrs in 2025.

Nalin said the football tournament was among several initiatives to honour police martyrs. He added that a cricket tournament would be held in Kathua in winter, followed by another in Kishtwar.

He said J&K Police had a deep connection with sports alongside its counterterror roles.

The Police Chief added that events like Jashn-e-Dal, Pedal for Peace and Marathon Run for Peace were organised in Srinagar, while Jammu would soon host a Marathon Run for Fun.

DGP further said that the force had hosted multiple national-level police tournaments in recent years. He added that the B.N. Malik Memorial All India Police Football Championship was held in 2022, followed by the All India Police Hockey Tournament in 2023 and the All India Water Sports Championship in 2024. He further said the All India Police Judo Cluster would be inaugurated shortly.

DGP said J&K Police personnel had earned medals and honours at national and international levels. He added that two constables had secured medals, including a gold in Birmingham, USA. He further said constable Hansraj had won a Rs 1.25 lakh cash prize in the 12th edition of the Ladakh Marathon.

DGP congratulated the winners and runners-up of the current tournament and expressed appreciation for all participants. He added that he was especially thankful to Anand Jain and his police team for shaping the event.

He said the support of officers involved in the tournament had ensured its success. He added that he remained grateful to the Lieutenant Governor for consistently attending police events and encouraging the force’s work.

DGP said the J&K Police valued the LG’s presence and backing at every level. He added that his encouragement strengthened the resolve of personnel.(KNS)
