JAMMU, Feb 24 : In a major fillip to connectivity and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Union Cabinet’s approval of a new civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport, entailing an investment of Rs 1,677 crore.
The project, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), entails the construction of a sprawling new terminal building spread over 71,500 square metres. According to an official statement, the enhanced facility is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and will have an annual handling capacity of one crore (10 million) passengers.
Terming it a “defining leap” for connectivity in the Valley, LG Sinha highlighted the project’s potential to transform the region’s economic landscape.
“The new Civil Enclave at Srinagar will upgrade Valley’s economic future, transforming Srinagar from a beautiful destination into a thriving one,” the Lieutenant Governor stated in a post on X.
He noted that improved air connectivity would act as a catalyst for tourism, attract investment, and generate employment opportunities for the local populace.
Recalling the foundations of the project, Mr. Sinha mentioned the initial announcement made in Srinagar on September 25, 2021, in the presence of the then Union Minister for Civil Aviation.
In a dual boost for the region’s aviation infrastructure, the Lt Governor also provided an update on the ongoing work at the Jammu Airport. He confirmed that the new terminal there is on track for completion by the end of this year.
“Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Sh. Narendra Modi Ji, Jammu Airport’s new terminal is set for completion by end of this year,” he said. “Upon commissioning, the advanced infrastructure in the renowned spiritual city will bolster connectivity and catalyze remarkable economic advancement.” (KNS)
