JAMMU, Mar 27 : Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Friday rapped the Jammu and Kashmir government over the delay in issuing a notification for the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) at Ompora in Budgam, asserting that the authority to set up the varsity rests with the administration.

The MLA Handwara as per news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had assured the Assembly in October last year that the university would start functioning from the Kashmir valley from 2026.

“Why no notification has been issued yet to establish Law University in Ompora Budgam, Kashmir, as per section 3 of J&K’s NLU Act?” Lone said.

He further raised concerns over the admission process, stating that if the Union Territory opts for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)—conducted by a consortium of more than 20 law universities across the country—starting classes in 2026 would be “impossible” as the examination has already been conducted for the upcoming academic session.

“The authority to establish University is Government of Jammu and Kashmir,” Lone added.

The National Law University in Kashmir was envisioned to strengthen legal education in the region, with the Chief Minister previously assuring the legislature about its timely operationalisation from the Ompora campus. (KNS)
