Srinagar, Apr 6 : The Meteorological Department on Monday forecast widespread rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday afternoon, warning of flooding risks along the Zojila Pass and Mughal Road.

Speaking to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), the Director of the Meteorological Department, Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, predicted another wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir, with intermittent light to moderate rain expected from Tuesday forenoon to Wednesday evening.

He said snowfall is also likely over the higher reaches during this period.

Dr. Mukhtar said a few places in both the Jammu division and the Kashmir division may receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while higher altitude areas are likely to witness light to moderate snowfall.

The officer also issued an advisory warning of the possibility of thunder, hailstorms, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km/h at a few places during April 7 and 8.

He also warned that intense, heavy showers for brief periods may trigger flash floods, landslides in vulnerable areas, and waterlogging in low-lying areas especially Zojila, Mughal Road.

The weather officer said that on April 9 and 10, there is a possibility of brief spells of light rain and snowfall over higher reaches at scattered places.

From April 11 to April 16, the weather is expected to remain generally dry, although a brief spell of rain at a few places cannot be ruled out towards the afternoon, he added.

Meanwhile, minimum night temperatures showed a mixed trend across the Union Territory, according to meteorological data accessed news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).

Several parts of the Kashmir division recorded temperatures 1-3 degrees Celsius above normal, while many places in the Jammu division experienced temperatures 0-3 degrees Celsius below normal.

Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at minus 1.1 degrees Celsius, the MeT department said.

In the Jammu division, Bhaderwah was the coldest place, with a minimum temperature of 4.0 degrees Celsius. (KNS)
