Jammu, May 13 : Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma said the government is planning to introduce an IPL-style tournament at the college and inter-district level in the Union Territory over the next 12 to 14 months to promote sports and engage youth.

Speaking at a function, Sharma said discussions had been held with the Board of Control for Cricket in India in this regard.

“I have spoken to the BCCI. In the next 12-14 months, we want to have an IPL at the college and inter-district level,” the minister said.

He said the government was focusing on multiple sporting activities, including winter sports, water sports and downhill mountain biking, to create more opportunities for youth across Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma said the administration was also strengthening Khelo India centres and enhancing support for sports infrastructure and youth programmes.

“We are providing assistance to Khelo India centres and working on long-term sports development. In the next four years, you will see a major change in the sports landscape,” he said.

The minister also directed contractors to maintain quality standards in sports infrastructure projects, saying complaints had been received regarding work at some places.

“Do not compromise with quality. Fear God and do not play with the future of children,” he said.

Sharma said promoting sports was important to steer youth away from drug abuse and other social problems.(KNS)
