Srinagar, Oct 29 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the proposed National Law University (NLU) in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to begin functioning by April next year. Initially, the university will operate from rented accommodation until a permanent campus is established, he informed the Legislative Assembly.

During the discussion on the resolution introduced by Bandipora MLA Nizamuddin Bhat, seeking the establishment of the NLU to promote advanced legal education and research in the Union Territory, Omar said ₹50 crore had already been sanctioned for the project.

“While the final location has not been decided, we are exploring suitable options. A site at Ompura in Budgam is available and could serve as a temporary campus,” the Chief Minister said.
National Conference MLAs Mir Saifullah and Sajjad Shaheen supported Bhat’s resolution, urging that the university be set up in Srinagar for its central accessibility and significance for students across the region.

MLA Sonawari Hilal Akbar Lone moved an amendment proposing that the university be established in his constituency instead.
After deliberations, the House passed the resolution, marking a key step toward setting up the National Law University in Jammu and Kashmir.(KNS)
