At just 17, Farzana Bashir from Nowgam Srinagar has taken a remarkable step that many twice her age hesitate to take she has published her first book, “The Legacy of a Single Mother.” For her, this book is more than a literary debut; it is a heartfelt tribute to her mother’s courage, sacrifices, and resilience.

Talking to The Kashmir Magazine, Farzana said the book was inspired by her mother’s life as a single parent. “Growing up without a father was never easy. But my mother’s strength, resilience, and unconditional love became my biggest inspiration. This book is my way of honoring her journey, not just as my mother but as a woman who never gave up despite countless challenges,” she said.

Farzana’s writing is deeply personal, shaped by her own journey of being raised by a single parent. She recalls how her mother silently shouldered responsibilities while facing societal judgment. “A woman raising children alone often carries struggles that no one sees. I grew up watching my mother put her own needs aside so I could have opportunities she never had. That became the foundation for my book the theme of sacrifice,” she explained.

Her mother’s resilience, she said, not only influenced her life but also gave shape to her writing voice. “Her sacrifices are the backbone of my life and the soul of my words,” Farzana told Kashmir Magazine.

Speaking about the challenges single mothers face, Farzana pointed out that financial strain is just one part of their struggle. “Raising children alone means carrying double the responsibility with half the support. Society should offer them encouragement, not criticism. Single mothers are not villains they are warriors,” she said firmly.

On her publishing journey with Lieper Publication, she shared a mixed experience. “The team was supportive and professional. They involved me in every step, but honestly, the editing and proofreading didn’t fully meet my expectations. Still, it was a positive experience overall,” Farzana remarked.

When asked what her mother’s reaction would be if she could read the book, Farzana’s voice softened. “She would smile through tears, seeing her love and lessons woven into every page,” she said.

To the readers who will pick up her debut work, Farzana left a heartfelt message: “Read it with your heart open. This is not only my story, but also the story of countless mothers whose sacrifices often go unseen. It is a mirror of silent struggles that shape our lives.”

Farzana Bashir, while still in school, has already etched her mark with a work that reflects strength, grief, resilience, and sacrifice. Through “The Legacy of a Single Mother,” she not only tells her own story but also amplifies the voices of single mothers everywhere.
