Srinagar, Jan 03: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, on Saturday said that agriculture and the allied sector remain the backbone of the Kashmir division, especially in rural areas, where government schemes play a key role in strengthening livelihoods.

Speaking to reporters on sidelines of symbolic launch of a vaccination drive, the DC said that the entire sheep population of Srinagar district will be vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease within one month, free of cost, as part of a mission-mode initiative led by the District Sheep Husbandry Department.

Labroo said the drive has been started in a mission mode under the supervision of the District Sheep Officer, and was launched symbolically on Saturday.

He added that throughout January 2026, all sheep across rural and peripheral belts of the district will receive FMD vaccination, which will be administered by government veterinary doctors, officers, and field teams.

He further highlighted the importance of AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0 schemes, saying that early resolution and ground implementation of these projects are crucial for improving infrastructure.

He said the schemes will help in source augmentation, distribution network improvement, and treatment facility expansion, which will directly improve the quantity and quality of water supply in Srinagar’s peripheral areas.

The DC also referred to the Supreme Court directions on urban utilities, stating that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is working actively to implement water infrastructure upgrades on the ground, especially in rural outskirts.

He said these improvements will ensure better access to clean and adequate drinking water for residents in peripheral areas.

Labroo also said that SMC is working under the monitoring of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and in line with Supreme Court guidelines, to ensure that the quality and supply of water improve in areas where it is needed the most.(KNS)
