Srinagar, Oct 2: A major weather system is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir later this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rain and snowfall due to an incoming Western Disturbance. The advisory, issued by the IMD’s Srinagar office, covers the period from October 4 to 7, with the most intense weather expected from the night of October 5 through the morning of October 7.

According to the advisory sent to regional authorities, including the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, the system is expected to cause moderate to heavy rain in the plains and significant snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir. Affected areas may include Anantnag–Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Gulmarg, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass. While higher altitudes may see heavy snow accumulation, moderate snowfall could occur in mid-level mountainous regions.

The plains, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, are likely to experience sustained moderate to heavy rainfall. In parts of the Jammu division, isolated locations could receive very heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds ranging between 40–50 km/h, with gusts possibly touching 70 km/h.

Officials have expressed concern over potential disruptions in surface transport, especially along key highways like Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh, as well as in interior hilly regions. Risks include landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, particularly in slope-prone areas.

Farmers across the Union Territory have been urged to suspend farming activities during this period to avoid damage to standing crops and ensure personal safety. Residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert, as rising water levels and temporary waterlogging are possible.
The advisory aims to raise public awareness and help authorities prepare necessary precautionary measures. People planning travel during these days are advised to check weather and traffic updates regularly and avoid venturing into vulnerable zones.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may issue further updates as the weather system develops.(KNS)
