Srinagar, Jun 26 : Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi on Friday praised the public and volunteers for their cooperation in the peaceful conduct of Muharram processions, especially in Zadibal, which saw the largest gathering of mourners.
Visiting the area to review arrangements, IGP Birdi as said the police had made special traffic and crowd management plans to ease movement through the congested lanes of the old city.
“Our arrangements were slightly different so that people could leave the narrow streets and reach their homes smoothly,” IGP told reporters as per KNS.
He acknowledged the difficulties arising from back-to-back religious observances and thanked volunteers and local organisers for their support.
“Volunteers were deployed, and police protocols were duly followed. We are very grateful to them,” he added.
The IGP also highlighted the “special public cooperation” and the role of organisers in implementing the security blueprint smoothly.
Police had earlier said over one lakh mourners were expected to take part in the Youm-e-Ashura processions on Friday, with the main Zuljinah procession concluding at Imambara Zadibal. (KNS)
