Jammu July 27 : Jammu & Kashmir is witnessing a big change in its railway network as Indian Railways upgrades tracks and passenger coaches, following the opening of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025.

The new link, featuring the iconic Chenab and Anji bridges, has allowed modern machines to replace manual work, making travel smoother and safer. A tamping machine has already serviced 88 km of track, while four Ballast Cleaning Machines have cleared 14 km, supported by 19,000 cubic metres of fresh ballast.

Track inspections with advanced monitoring systems have been carried out, helping detect areas needing repairs. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said new technologies like ultrasound fracture detection, AI-based monitoring, and upgraded track fittings are improving safety and working conditions.

Along with track upgrades, passenger coaches in the Kashmir Valley are being modernised. Earlier, DEMU and MEMU rakes had to be transported by road for servicing. Now, thanks to the new link, they are reaching Lucknow and Jalandhar workshops by rail. Overhauled coaches will feature bio-toilets, anti-graffiti exteriors, new seating, charging points, and better passenger information systems.

Most upgrades are expected to finish by August 31, 2025. These changes will make train travel in Jammu & Kashmir safer, faster, and more comfortable, while strengthening the region’s connection with the rest of India.(KNS)
