Kupwara court sentences Kralgund accused to 20 years in POCSO case

Handwara, Mar 24 ; A court in north Kashmir’s Kupwara has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2021, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Irshad Ahmad Mir, was convicted in a case registered under FIR No. 69/2021 at Police Station Kralgund.

The Principal District & Sessions Court, Kupwara, sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 under Section 4(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was also awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹10,000 under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The sentences will run concurrently, officials said.

Police described the conviction as a significant achievement, highlighting the dedicated investigation and professional approach of Handwara Police in ensuring justice for victims of crimes against children.

Handwara Police reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable sections of society and ensuring strict action against offenders officials further added. (KNS)
