Srinagar, May 6 : Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday accused the National Conference (NC) of dragging the Holy Quran into political rivalry and remaining silent on key issues affecting Muslims in the region.

Speaking to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), Mehbooba Mufti said, “The National Conference has fallen to this level. They have even involved the Holy Quran in politics. They don’t understand the greatness of the Holy Quran.”

“If they want to fight us politically, then they are not familiar with the first religion of the Holy Quran. If they were, they would have opened their mouths when the Waqf Bill was passed. They would have spoken up when Siraj-ul-Uloom School was closed,” she said.

The PDP president also accused the NC of remaining silent over the surveillance of mosque committees, maulvis, and imams, besides the alleged “destruction” of the Urdu language. She further claimed that backdoor appointments were being made in government departments without advertisements.

“The jobs that are being outsourced to the banks — you don’t even know, there is no advertisement. That too in the thousands. So if they want to divert our attention from their failures, then, for God’s sake, don’t involve the Holy Quran in this,” Mehbooba said.

She also criticised the NC over the demolition of houses in the name of action against drug peddlers and militant sympathisers, besides the firing of government employees.

“Today, people’s houses are being demolished in the name of drug peddlers. Before that, the houses of militant sympathisers were demolished. Employees are being fired from government jobs. They are watching a spectacle. To hide their failures, they should fight with us, blame us. And, for God’s sake, don’t involve the Holy Quran in this,” she added. (KNS)
