Srinagar, Nov 15: Nine people, including a Naib Tehsildar, were killed and 29 others injured when an explosive stored at Nowgam Police Station detonated late on Friday night, officials said.
According to a police official, the explosive, believed to be ammonium nitrate, had been brought from Faridabad in Haryana following the seizure linked to a doctors’ terror module. The material was being kept at the police station when it went off.
Most of the deceased were police personnel and members of the Forensic Science Laboratory team. A local tailor is also among the dead. Identification of bodies is ongoing as some were severely damaged.
The injured were taken to Army’s 92 Base Hospital, SKIMS Soura, and a local private hospital for treatment.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police are investigating the cause of the blast and the circumstances under which the explosive detonated.(KNS)
