Jammu, May 16 : A 60-year-old man died while seven others, mostly children, were hospitalised after allegedly consuming a wild vegetable in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Saturday.

The incident was reported from Mohra village in the Kotranka subdivision, where members of two families consumed a wild vegetable on Friday afternoon, they said.

By evening, eight members of the families complained of symptoms of food poisoning and were taken to the Community Health Centre in Kandi before being referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Rajouri for specialised treatment, officials said.

Mohammad Hussain, 60, died during treatment at the hospital, they added.

The remaining seven persons, most of them children, are undergoing treatment at the hospital and their condition is being monitored, officials said.

They said preliminary investigation suggests food poisoning caused by consumption of a wild vegetable, though the exact cause is being ascertained.

Authorities have started an investigation into the incident, officials added.(KNS).
