HANDWARA, Jan. 18 : The Handwara Police on Sunday intercepted a vehicle and seized 750 kilograms of illegally transported rice, continuing a crackdown on the unlawful movement and black marketing of essential commodities.

A police officer told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that during a routine checkpoint inspection at Vilgam, officers observed a suspicious vehicle and halted it for a search.

Upon inspection, the officers discovered the vehicle was carrying a significant quantity of rice without valid authorization or supporting documentation, the officer stated. The driver could not produce any permit or proof legitimizing the transport of the goods.

Consequently, officers confiscated the entire consignment, which weighed roughly 750 kilograms, on the spot and impounded the vehicle, the officer said.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant legal sections at the Vilgam Police Station. An investigation is ongoing to trace the source and intended destination of the seized rice.

The officer added that Handwara Police reaffirms its commitment to curbing illegal trade and ensuring stringent enforcement of laws pertaining to essential commodities. The public is urged to cooperate with law enforcement and to report any such illicit activities to their nearest police station. (KNS)
