Srinagar, Jul 18: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday extended the summer vacation for all government and recognised private schools in the Kashmir division and the winter zone of the Jammu division by three days, officials said.
Schools, which were earlier scheduled to reopen on July 20, would now remain closed till July 22, they said.
Classes would resume on July 23, unless modified by a subsequent order, an official added.
The decision was taken in view of the prevailing heatwave conditions and inclement weather forecast, officials said.
“The safety and well-being of students, teachers and non-teaching staff is the government’s foremost priority,” an official spokesperson said.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo, in a post on X, confirmed the extension of the summer vacation up to July 22.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall and possible localised flash floods in parts of the union territory in the coming days, officials added.
The School Education Department has directed heads of institutions to remain alert and monitor weather updates, they said.
Parents across the Valley welcomed the decision, many of whom had expressed concerns over children stepping out in the searing heat, officials added. (KNS)
