Srinagar, Jul 18 : The annual Shri Amarnathji Yatra will be temporarily suspended from both the traditional Pahalgam and the shorter Baltal routes from tomorrow, July 19, following an adverse weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), authorities said on Saturday.
An official spokesperson said the decision has been taken as a “precautionary measure” to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims in view of the forecast of inclement weather over the next few days.
“In view of the forecast of inclement weather over the next few days and considering the safety and well-being of the pilgrims, the Shri Amarnathji Yatra shall remain temporarily suspended from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes with effect from July 19, 2026,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said no onward movement of pilgrims will be allowed from the Baltal and Nunwan/Chandanwari base camps from tomorrow.
The yatra will resume only after a comprehensive assessment of weather conditions and confirmation that the routes are safe, the official added. Fresh updates regarding the resumption of the pilgrimage will be issued in due course.
The development comes as the IMD has forecast a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting authorities to advise pilgrims and locals to remain cautious and avoid venturing near rivers, streams and mountain routes .
Official sources said more than 3.70 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the Holy Cave Shrine since the commencement of the ongoing yatra. (KNS)
