Jammu, Mar 14 : Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the firing attempt on National Conference president Farooq Abdullah in Jammu earlier this week, officials said.

According to an order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, was attending a marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall in Greater Kailash area of Jammu on March 11.

At around 10:10 pm, when the protected person was leaving the venue, an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range, the order said.

The attempt was foiled due to the prompt action of police personnel deployed with Abdullah, it said.

Police have registered a case under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act at Gangyal police station in Jammu.

Considering the seriousness of the case, a Special Investigation Team headed by a senior officer has been constituted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, to conduct a detailed probe.

The SIT includes SSP Sanjay Sharma, SP Headquarters Jammu Irshad Hussain Rather, DySP Arvind Kumar Sambyal, Inspector Saroop Singh, Inspector Paramjeet Singh, SHO Gangyal Inspector Sanjeev Chib and Inspector Shariq Majeed.

The team has been directed to complete the investigation promptly in accordance with the statutory timeframe, the order said.(KNS).
