Srinagar, Sep 5: At least 25 sheep were charred to death after being struck by lightning during a sudden thunderstorm in the Karaknaar area of Gulmarg on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses said the flock was grazing in the higher reaches when the weather, which had been clear till then, changed dramatically, accompanied by heavy thunder and lightning. The shepherd managing the livestock said the strike killed over two dozen sheep on the spot.

“The animals belonged to nearly 15 villages. The weather turned hostile within minutes and lightning claimed more than 25 sheep,” the shepherd told KNS.

The incident occurred as several parts of the Kashmir Valley, especially the upper belts, experienced a sudden spell of rain and snowfall, triggering a dip in temperature.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged pastoralists and tourists to remain cautious in view of the volatile weather. (KNS)
