Srinagar, Jan 20 : Expressing optimism over a surge in tourist arrivals and favourable snowfall forecasts, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Monday invited visitors to explore Srinagar and its surrounding areas, saying new Smart City projects such as the redeveloped Ameera Kadal pedestrian bridge would further enhance the city’s appeal.
“Tourist footfall has increased this year and we are receiving good predictions of snowfall. We are hopeful that tourism will continue to grow — not only in Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam, but also in Srinagar and nearby areas,” Garg told reporters, inviting tourists to experience new public infrastructure developed under the Smart City initiative.
Garg was speaking after the dedication of the pedestrian bridge at Ameera Kadal, a historic crossing over the Jhelum River in the heart of Srinagar. He described the project as a “gift from Smart City to the people of Srinagar,” noting that it would provide uninterrupted access to a 4.5-kilometre-long riverfront stretch.
The divisional commissioner said Ameera Kadal holds deep historical and cultural significance for Kashmir, with a legacy spanning more than 250 years.
“People have known Ameera Kadal for generations. Today, they will see it in a new form, while its heritage value remains intact,” he said.
According to Garg, the pedestrian bridge is expected to significantly improve movement for locals and tourists alike, particularly in busy commercial areas such as Lal Chowk, Punnikhyan and adjoining localities, which witness heavy footfall throughout the year.
He thanked the Lieutenant Governor for dedicating the bridge to the public and acknowledged the cooperation of local traders and the traders’ association president in facilitating the project. Garg also expressed appreciation for the Smart City support team, congratulating them on the completion of the work.
“The response on the ground shows that footfall by tourists and locals in this area is already very high, and projects like this will further strengthen Srinagar’s position as a vibrant urban and tourism hub,” he said.
Reiterating his message to visitors, Garg said the revamped bridge and riverfront were part of broader efforts to improve urban infrastructure while preserving the city’s historic character.
“This is another new gift from Smart City, and we invite tourists from across the country to visit, walk along the riverfront and experience Srinagar in a renewed way,” he added.(KNS).
