Srinagar, Jan 20 : Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said the redevelopment of the historic Amira Kadal bridge under the Srinagar Smart City project aims to blend the city’s heritage with modern amenities and revive its old urban connections.

Speaking after inaugurating the redeveloped pedestrian bridge, Sinha said the project seeks to create cultural and vibrant public spaces by integrating Srinagar’s traditional character with contemporary infrastructure.

He said the bridge, rebuilt in 2023, has now been completed with all facilities and dedicated to the people of Srinagar. “Whether it is bridges, pedestrian zones, riverfront works or parks, the focus has been on creating quality public spaces while preserving heritage,” the lieutenant governor said.

Sinha said the completion of such projects would help restore the historic linkage between Srinagar’s commercial centre and the old city area of Shehar-e-Khaas.

Officials said the Amira Kadal bridge, located over the Jhelum river, has been redesigned exclusively for pedestrians as part of the Srinagar Smart City initiative.

They said the redevelopment is aimed at improving pedestrian connectivity between Lal Chowk and adjoining commercial areas while also contributing to riverfront development.

The lieutenant governor was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, senior police and civil administration officials, and the MLA from Lal Chowk during the inauguration.

Officials said the revamped bridge has improved walkways, seating areas and modern lighting facilities to enhance safety and public access. They added that the project forms part of a broader plan to upgrade urban infrastructure while preserving Srinagar’s cultural identity.(KNS)
