Shopian, Dec 27 : The Wildlife Department, in coordination with Shopian Police, on Saturday successfully tranquilised a leopard in Pinjoora village of Shopian district following a day-long search and rescue operation.

Officials said the leopard was first sighted by local residents early in the morning, triggering panic in the area. Upon receiving the information, teams from the Wildlife Department rushed to the spot and launched a search operation to trace the animal. Shopian Police later joined the operation to assist with crowd control and ensure public safety.

During the operation, the leopard reportedly attacked several individuals, leaving four people injured, including one Wildlife Department employee. All the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby medical facility, where their condition is stated to be stable.

After hours of sustained efforts, the wildlife teams successfully tranquilised and captured the leopard. The animal was subsequently shifted to a secure location for medical examination and further observation.

Authorities have advised residents, especially those living near forest-fringe areas, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary movement, while assuring that preventive measures are being strengthened to avert such incidents in the future.(KNS)
